via la.guestofaguest.com: America's #1 luxury lifestyle magazine, Travel & Leisure, just released their "America's Favorite Cities" survey, where respondents rank the Best and Worst. 'Sampling bias' refers to when the group of people chosen to conduct a survey or research study do not represent the full group that is supposedly being studied. For example, if we published a study called "LA's Favorite Bars," and then we only interview the drunk 16-year olds puking outside the Key Club, you might read it and end up thinking that the consensus best bar in LA is a K-Town grocery store that doesn't ask for ID when they sell Four Loko. This concept also applies to Travel & Leisure Magazine, and their "America's Favorite Cities" survey which I feel was off on more than a few key points. More»
So Travel & Leisure Magazine, America's #1 luxury lifestyle magazine owned by a credit card company, released the 2010 results for their staggeringly comprehensive "America's Favorite Cities" survey, where respondents rank everything from Best Nightlife to Best Antique Stores. And as we've already been conditioned to expect from nationwide surveys like this, L.A. got trashed. Since the survey separated visitors and residents, I can't even blame it all on out-of-towners who got mugged by a tranny on Hollywood Boulevard, but I still can't help but feel like it was off on a few key points. Let's start by examining three of the most glaring mistakes, along with the cities that should have been in that spot. More»

Even those who saw them play at Coachella this year could not have predicted the epic-ness of the Phoenix show at the Hollywood Bowl Saturday night. From the moment the Parisians, who could easily be mistaken for local Silver Lake folk, took to the stage letting "Lisztomania" rip, it was electric. The first concert of their world tour, the acoustics of sold out venue were perfect for the crisp guitar shredding and plucky keyboards that filled their set as the crowd danced and sang along to their favorites under the evening sky. [Photo via] Everyone already loves San Francisco, but throw a summer music fest into the mix, like this weekend's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival at Golden Gate Park and there's never been a better reason for a weekend road trip up north. Phoenix, the French indie-pop-rock band that sings in English, headlines Madison Square Garden on October 20th. It's the latest Pitchfork-approved band to snake its way up the ladder from dingy rock clubs to the big stage.
