Your Field Guide To The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival Rock Stars

The annual CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival has taken over the city once again. Starting last night, hundreds of bands, some established and many destined to be the next big thing, swarmed the city’s bars, clubs and concerts halls for the festival, which runs through October 24th. Music, of course, is the main focus. But an event like this also means partying. And if an upstart act doesn’t happen to land a record deal, he or she might as well get some lovin’. So why not help them out? The following spots are all located near CMJ venues and should give you a chance of celebrating with the talent after a successful show and cheering them up after a bust:  More »

A Hater’s Guide To Hipster Culture

[All photos by Nicky Digital] Record labels ALIFE and DIM MAK hosted their “Cloak and Dagger” party at Santo’s Party House on Thursday, an event that attracted some of New York’s hipster elite to Tribecca for some drunken debauchery.  Although the party looked like fun, I feel compelled to hate on some of the uber-hip guests for the way they choose to appear in photographs and in general.  Confused? Here are some visual examples to help illustrate my point… More »

“Paper Heart” Promoters Sponsor A Bus-Party Bash

[Photos by NickyDigital]. The producers of Michael Cera’s new film “Paper Heart” and La Rumba Express Bus Company teamed up on Thursday to give several lucky New Yorkers the “bus adventure” of their lifetimes.  The debauchery began as the bus picked up Charlyne Yi, Cera’s co-star, at Rockefellar Center and made its way toward Johnny Utahs in Midtown, where the actress participated in the obligatory wing-eating contest and bull-riding competition. More story, photos, and video (!) below… More »

“Know Your Meme: The Game Show!” Spices Up Ignite NYC III At Santos Party House

[Team Sorgatz]

Go HERE for more photos by BRIAN VAN NIEUWENHOVEN and HERE for more photos by RACHEL SKLAR and TAG YOURSELF and YOUR FRIENDS!

Last night, I took my very first trip to Santos Party House (I know!) to experience Ignite NYC III first hand. Rocketboom kicked the night off with “Know Your Meme: The Game Show! Pwn, Win, or Fail!” I asked Caroline McCarthy (member of “Team Sorgatz”) what was up with her team’s name (Rex Sorgatz was on “Team Boxxy”). Here was their reasoning:

“We decided to be “Team Sorgatz” just to confuse people. We thought it’d be funny if we named our team after Rex and wore his trademark look (scarves, glasses, blazers) specifically so that people would be like, “Hey, wait, this makes no sense.” And then, if we lost and he won, the name “Sorgatz” would still forever be associated with failure!”

(They lost).

If you were in NYC for New Year’s, and were in the mood to party with some real experienced New Yorkers, you were at Santos Party House watching Sophia Lamar pouring champagne, the Misshapes on stage, and Bad Brilliance in the crowd getting some action.  There were characters galore, and alcohol for everyone.  It was THE party to be at to ring in 2009.

Bowie Ball Brings Out Some Pretty Things

GO HERE for more photos by Maggie Hunter and TAG YOURSELF and YOUR FRIENDS!

Saturday Night was the much-anticipated, glam rock party Bowie Ball at Santos’ Party House. A fantastic group of DJs, promotors, and NY party fixtures teamed up to host the event, including nightlife impresario Deryck Todd,  DJ Michael T of the late, great Motherfucker, L Magazine’s Zachary David Palmer, and Project Runway’s Stella B. Zotis. We were greeted at the door by familiar face Thomas Onorato, and once inside were treated to two packed dance floors, live music performances by Ziggy Starlet, Pixie Harlots, and Michael Formika Jones, and a burlesque show by the gorgeous Dirty Martini.

New York Is NOT Dead. Where The Cool Kids Are…

New York Nightlife Dead?? I don’t think so!  And, I spent the better half of my afternoon yesterday on a mission to prove the naysayers wrong.  I presented one of my favorites, Blue Ribbon, and now you all deserve to know where the coolest people (for lack of a better word) are hanging out after hours. So, I asked A Rising PR, A Nightlife Columnist, A G9 Connoisseur, A Dapper Business Man With a Penchant for Expensive Things and Beautiful Women,The REAL Izzy Gold, An Indie Worshiper of Rock, A Creative Jeweler,  A Couple of Trust Funders “In Transition”, Two Party Starting DJ’s, A Paid “Predictor of Trends”, A Venture Capitalist, A Cool Cravat Cat, and A Hipster Magazine Editor where their favorite night spots were (excluding the known Beatrice Inn, The Box, 1Oak, Martignettis, Rose Bar, Gold Bar, The Eldridge, Bowery Hotel, etc.), and here is what they came up with:

Apotheke
The newest hot spot, in the rising Chinatown neighborhood, has hit JACKPOT.  This place came up on almost everyone’s list.  And why not? Who wouldn’t love a nice absinthe cocktail after a tough day of being cool? More »

Daily Style Phile: A Photo Stylist’s Personal Style

Dustin McSwane

On the way back from Santos Party House I came across Dustin McSwane, a photo stylist who works for Samantha Pleet. The colors he chose to accent his canary shirt worked flawlessly.  Also the pattern on his pants is very slight and ties the whole outfit together. He made his necklace by wrapping silk around a chain.
