For a recreational activity that almost everybody is utterly terrible at, surfing has truly captured California's imagination. In fact, I'd say the ratio of competent surfers to complete movies about surfing is no more than a healthy 3:1. And while that means we end up with a Blue Crush for every Point Break, it's also how we end up with things like the hilarious Haunted Heats Halloween Costume Surf Contest. Luckily, LA Weekly was there with a camera so we can all enjoy. More»
John Slattery from "Mad Men," assuming that his off-camera persona is also an overindulgent, silver-spoon dilettante with no taste for counter-culture might be a little presumptuous, especially after Emily caught him hanging in Silver Lake last night. Could the real John Slattery be– gasp– a hipster!? MORE>>
Sometimes an actor takes on a role or acting style so iconic that it becomes hard to separate him or her from the character. Sometimes, this works out, like when Nic Cage turns out to be an absolute lunatic in real life, but in the case of John Slattery from "Mad Men," assuming that his off-camera persona is also an overindulgent, silver-spoon dilettante with no taste for counter-culture might be a little presumptuous, especially after Emily caught him hanging in Silver Lake last night. Tin Ojeda never planned for any of this to happen. He never planned to make an entire business out of "Drug Money," but when his infamous surfboard attracted so much attention, it kind of just happened. He never planned on spray painting surfboards, but when his friend asked him to spray paint all of the soft tops used for surf lessons, he did. He never expected his spray paint-splattered shirts to become so popular, but with people approaching him to make more and the inspiration from his girlfriend, he did. When 58-year-old Mark Patterson, a self-proclaimed "free-ranging spiritual thinker", of San Diego mounted his 10-ft mosaic of the Virgin Mary shredding like a pro on an Encinitas railroad bridge, the message was not meant to be religious.
