What’s in a name? Sure, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, but New Yorkers know that a restaurant’s success hinges on a catchy name. Todd English’s latest project, a restaurant/lounge in Chelsea, has foodies drooling in anticipation, and next week it will open its doors for the first time. Today, we get word on what the name of the space will be: Juliet. No word on whether this is in any reference to one of Todd’s old (or current) flames, but we are excited to see what Miss Juliet tastes like.

Todd English’s New Chelsea Spot Primed To Open Next Week With Private Tasting From The Supper Club
This summer, we broke the news that Todd English (of the W Hotels restaurants, and a Food Network star), and club owner Jon B were joining forces to revamp the old Opera space in Chelsea. (539 W. 21st). Today, we got wordthat the space, which has yet to releaseits official name, will open its doors to some lucky Supper Club members for a private viewing and tasting. There will be live acts to keep guests entertained next Tuesday night, and we will be there, with bells on, to test out the newest edition to the Chelsea family. Invite on left. The dinning /clubbing combo has always been a curious one at best. Those who are familiar with the old adage “Don’t shit where you eat”, can probably sympathize with the fear of finding a discarded cigarette butt in their ravioli. Ok perhaps an exaggeration, but eating among vodka drenched floors and smoked pit carpets can be disconcerting. So this of course begs the question, why are so many clubs like the fronting as restaurants and vice versa? More»

[Todd English and Jon B. Restaurants are the new nightclubs?]
The closing of Home and GuestHouse last week looked to be the coup de grâce for club alley on 27th street that has over the past 3 years devolved into a Coney Island of NYC Nightlife. Bungalow 8, Marquee, and Cain defined the best of the best four years ago, but the spot jumped the shark when famed B-list promoter Jon B appeared on the scene, milking the proverbial teet of a low watt crowd for all of their worth. Todd English Opens The Libertine, Finally Giving Us Something To Celebrate In Wall Street Neighborhood

Todd English’s highly anticipated Libertine in the Gild Hall (Thompson Hotel) has been looking for its staff for weeks. And, although one may argue that this wouldn’t be the best week to open your new bar (what with the whole “Crisis” on Wallstreet), Todd English did just that. And, in doing so, he further proved hotelier Jason Pomeranc’s stance that:
“There’s no right time or wrong time to open a place like this. It is our duty as hoteliers and restaurateurs to provide the inns and watering holes where people can celebrate their victories and mourn their losses.” [The Observer]
Celebrate they did. With hosts Jason Pomeranc, Danny Baker, Andres Santo Domingo, Topper Mortimer, John Ylvisaker, and Diego Garcia in the driver’s seat, this party would have been a hit in the middle of a blackout, let alone a shaky market.

Our favorite foodie Christine Cho has connections to some of the top chefs and culinary experts in the world. Now, it seems people are catching on to this. A recent email sent to Christine:
Dear Christine,
I have read your work. I know that you are a lover of all things culinary including Todd English. My name is [Redacted] and I ama writers assistant to award winning Hollywood Producer and filmmaker [Redacted] here in Los Angeles.
We recently pitched our agency on a reality dating show concept for Todd English. They loved the idea and we were strongly advised to reach him direct to avoid the delays, blocks and red-tape that can come from going through managers and agencies.
Todd English along with the Thompson Hotel Group will open Libertine this fall in the Financial District. Following in the footsteps of his other long lasting restaurant at the W Hotel in Union Square, Olives, Todd E. will bring his creative flare to an area on the revival.
Aside from being an accomplished chef and entrepreneur, Todd is one of those personalities that light up a room by sheer presence. We have been friends for quite some while and it always gives me pleasure to know I have new place to eat under his wing. Get ready for some good food and some good times at Libertine!!
How was the concept created for Libertine? Where did you pull inspiration for the menu? Any particular pub or place?
The inspiration for Libertine is really that clubby, 1970’s London vibe, updated into something modern. I’ve always really loved tavern food, so the menu reflects a lot of classic dishes reinterpreted with cheeky twists.
