L.A.'s art scene has seriously been rocking these days with shows and events that get the youngens excited. Between Terrywood at OHWOW, Mike D's Transmission LA that gave us a multi-sensory experience with performances by Santigold and Diplo and James Franco's Rebel exhibition we've had a steady flow of fresh and interesting art culture pumping through this town. Perhaps that's why Diplo, everyone's favorite DJ/producer/BlackBerry spokesperson, was tapped to close out one of the undisputed coolest L.A. cultural happenings to go down in recent history with one of his signature panty-dropping DJ sets on Cinco de Mayo Saturday night. It's impossible, try as we might, not to view Mike D's amazing Transmission L.A. audio/visual art festival at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA through the prism of last week's tragic loss of Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch. But, while it's not our place to presume to know MCA's thoughts, we're pretty sure he would have been happy that even as the world was mourning his loss, Transmission was continuing to thrill music-loving audiences with big-name performances like Thursday's show from British garage pioneer DJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy.  More»

Last night, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA kicked off Transmission L.A., a 17-day audio/visual arts festival curated by Beastie Boy and cultural icon Michael "Mike D" Diamond. While the event was packed beyond capacity almost immediately, those lucky (or early) enough to get in were treated to a full-spectrum sensory overload of immersive audio/visual art installations, food, live music, and style.
