[Toby Hemingway, Sebastian Stan, Will Malnati. All photos by NICK HUNT for PMc]. Bridgehampton Polo is one of those summer events building anticipation the moment the car’s packed for that first bumper-to-bumper trek east in June. Oh the schmoozing! The clothing! Oh right, and the actual polo! So it’s sort of hard to imagine this stand alone affair partnering with a chip company to get the tents even more hopping, but that is very much the case, this year. The Mercedez-Benz tournament partnered with Pop Chip, More»

If you read Allen Salkin’s article in the Sunday Styles this week, you know high-school English teacher Amanda Hunt is PISSED. She came all the way from Port St. Lucie, Florida in the hopes of having to wait in a long line outside a club, be scrutinized by the likes of Wass Stevens or one of his croonies, pay $18 for a cosmo, have the cosmo spilled all over her when some sweaty guy bumps into her, get separated from her friends, dance wildly to “Umbrella”, find friends crying in the bathroom, and stumble out at 4:30 am with smeared makeup, bump-it askew, but one hell of a story to tell her English class. “The Door At Avenue Is “The Door” In Town These Days. My Spies Tell Me Of Johnny Depp And Jay-Z And Beyonce And Jack “Fucking” Nicholson Passing Through Like It’s Their Home.”
When this guy’s spies say it’s true that Avenue is the hottest door in town, it most certainly is. Who claimed this? Answer below… More»
Well, if you’re ex-boxer from Brooklyn, slash ex-District Attorney from the Bronx, slash actor, slash beleaguered doorman, your crisis of identity is gonna catch up with you sometime and you’ll crack. This is what one can assume happened last night, when GofG favorite Wass Stevens, once of Marquee, now of Avenue, allegedly hit someone with the metal end of a velvet rope when some poor kid from UCSD refused to leave after getting rejected.

Back in March we ran a piece on actor/clubber Mickey Rourke and how he hooked up a group of his NYC nightlife buddies with parts in The Wrestler. These guys of course are doormen at select Rourke haunts in the city (namely 1 Oak and Cipriani Sundays), and happen to also be budding actors (Though Wass Stevens has definitely gained a lot of traction over the years pre-Wrestler).

[Doormen Maurizio Ferrigno, Armin Amiri, and Wass Stevens all star in The Wrestler]
We can’t help but find Mickey Rourke lovable. Maybe its because he was such a misfit in the past, or because he still loves to rip it up on the town at 1 Oak and Cipriani Sundays, or perhaps it’s that he has risen from the ashes like a Phoenix. Or maybe it’s because he hooked up his nightlife friends (and NYC resident doormen) with parts in The Wrestler. This isn’t to say these guys wouldn’t have made it on their talent, but it sure doesn’t hurt to get a good referral from Mickey (and he has certainly logged in his time with these guys over the years!)

Page Six Magazine ran a piece this Sunday about NYC’s Doorman titled “Barbarians at the Gate.” I gave my two cents on Wass Stevens and the door at Bea. Here’s what they printed:
Wass Stevens, “ageless”
Club: Marquee (289 10th Ave. at 27th St.)
The scene: After five years, Marquee “is the one mega-club that’s lasted,” says Rachelle Hruska, editor of nightlife blog GuestofaGuest.com, adding that much of that success comes down to Wass. “He’s a great New York character and people want to be where he is. He brings style to the scene,” she says of the Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, native, who got his start 24 years ago at legendary club the Palladium.
Today is Wass Steven’s Birthday and we would like to wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the legendary (and most stylish) doorman. We missed out on his birthday party last night (at Marquee of course), but would like to take a moment today to toast another year of impeccable style ala Wass Stevens. Wass sports custom made Ron & Ron suits and runs the door at Marquee. Always located on the left side of the door, he relishes in his 30% acceptance rate, and 70/30 girl-guy ratio (sounds like he is running a school of higher education). At Veruka, Wass was known as the highest paid doorman in New York City, and has certainly continued this trend at Marquee.

Sure this video is a few months old, but it includes our favorites like Rich Thomas and Jeff Goldstein, oh and that line from Dune/Marquee’s door guy Wass Stevens about not trying to get in because we probably won’t? Priceless.

Wass Stevens, the man, the myth, the legend, was spotted at the opening day of Polo in Bridgehampton this weekend. In his pastel stripped suit, white pants, and slick ‘do he showed us all how Polo is done- Wass style. Though he doesn’t need a Polo match to create sartorial magic…he’s an absolute pro of that on and off the fields.
A tipster writes:
Marquee got shut down by the cops just now. (9:11PM)
We are in the process of getting more details, but for those Hamptons-bound people this shouldn’t put too much of a dent on the weekend. Developing…
In the meantime you can reminisce with previous posts we’ve done on Marquee’s famed doorman, Wass Stevens.
