Graydon Carter’s Ye Old Waverly Inn Blog, Old And Wavering (Defunct)
You would think that with a constant flow of celebs, moguls, impressarios, etc. that Graydon Carter’s power dining spot, Ye Old Waverly Inn, would have constant fodder to blog about. Or so it seemed when Carter first launched the Waverly Inn blog in January of this year. But what may have seemed at first a brilliant way to shill for the spot in hindsight looks to be an ill-conceived project at best. The blog hasn’t been posted on since May 21st of this year.
For starters it appears to be a serious conflict of interest. Sure Graydon isn’t running for public office, but as an editor, to use Vanity Fair’s resources to publicize a personal investment doesn’t ring quite right, similiar to the distaste of paying $65 dollars for a plate of mac and cheese. Even if it’s not him doing the actual writing, the effect and intent is the same. More »

Did Serena Get The $65 Dollar Mac and Cheese At Waverly?

The Mac + Cheese Is $30, the truffles make it $65
So I think we’ve solved it. The Mac and Cheese. Could this be the secret that Serena Williams is counting on for success tonight when she goes up against Venus? We’ll never know, but one thing we do know: you won’t find this on the defunct Ye Old Waverly Inn shill-blog. They haven’t had a post on it since the 21st of May!
More importantly, you won’t find any other beer than Heineken at the Inn. Not sure what Graydon Carter was thinking there….

Graydon Carter’s Monkey Business
It has been revealed that Graydon Carter of Vanity Fair/Waverly Inn fame was the buyer behind The Monkey Bar and is expecting to reopen the once popular spot next summer.
“The restaurant, located in the Elysee Hotel at 60 East 54th Street, had been owned by The Glazier Group since 1994.
The Monkey Bar opened in 1932 and after Repeal, quickly became a popular watering hole. When the Glazier Group bought it, they restored the monkey murals in the bar and commissioned the architect David Rockwell to give the back dining room a plush, sexy 1940’s cabaret look. Over the years, a succession of chefs has come and gone, including John Schenk, Kurt Gutenbrunner, Patricia Yeo and Chris Cheung.” [Diner's Blog]

Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson And Waverly Oh My…..
We began our night feeding my ongoing musical obsession at the City Center Encore’s production of Damn Yankees. The last City Center Production we went to was last summer’s Gypsy with Patti Lupone. As you may know, the production transferred to Broadway and garnered Tony Awards this year for not only Patti Lupone but also for her co-stars Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti. So we had very high hopes for this production and we weren’t disappointed.
Scott has a theory that it must be in Cheyenne’s contract that he be shirtless in every show that he appears, much like his theory that Sarah Jessica Parker’s contract states that she be referred to as beautiful at least a half dozen times in any screenplay.

Lydia Hearst wants to write.

Gawker is reporting that the lovely red-headed socialite/turned model is now wishing to turn writer. We love 24 year old Ford model Lydia for her Heatherette fame (clothing line started by our favorite club kid Richie Rich. Obviously, anyone that is a friend of Richie’s is a friend of ours. Now we are curious to see what she can bring to the table outside of Vogue covers and catwalks.

(Lydia as Dorothy for the fall ‘07 Heatherette line)
Her blog-like words of wisdom will apparently be showing up in the newly founded Page Six Magazine which Lydia wants to do because in her own words:
“I will be the first to say that I have had a charmed life. I get to travel to places and have adventures that most people don’t. I get to design handbags and walk runways. So why not write about it?”
Some other interesting things we learn are that Ms. Hearst thinks models are getting used these days and are way underpaid. She would eat at the Waverly Inn, but after getting snubbed for being 15 minutes late there thinks the place is overrated, because when she goes out at night she’s not in search of power like Rachel Zoe, but FOOD (usually sushi?). She claims her column will change the labels that people prescribe her to: “a socialite, a jet-setter, nothing more than the sparkling by-product of my legacy”. She trusts noone and thinks that if you have any more than 5 close friends you are letting too many people in. And, finally, her best friend is Harriet the Spy’s Michelle Trachtenberg, which we find a rather odd pairing, yet somehow comforting.

1OAK will “Change the face of nightlife in New York”…

…So claims Richie Akiva, owner of Butter with partner Scott Sartiano, to NY Mag. 1OAK is set to open on October 19th at 453 West 17th street and Richie isn’t talking…at least about the new club which he “really wants to be a surprise”. One thing he is talking about is his diet, though even that comes off sounding too cool for us. Here are some of our takes from the interview:
-Richie starves himself for the Jewish holidays, and has since he was a baby. This includes not even allowing himself water or a face wash for 24 hours.
-His favorite cereals are Apple Jacks and Frosted Mini Wheats.
-He eats at either Butter, Bar Pitti, Da Silvano, or Cipriani for lunch everyday.
-Sundays are his “wifey days”…“Sunday I don’t do anything except hang out with my girlfriend at the time, whoever that may be. I call that day ‘wifey day.’” Um…cute?
-Number of times he “name dropped” during his interview about his “DIET”=
1.) Wednesday, September 19th: “I didn’t eat dinner. I had a big party for Puffy’s fragrance launch at a townhouse — basically a mansion — on 67th Street and Madison.” (One)
2.) Tuesday, September 18th: “I had dinner at the Waverly Inn with my partner Scott Sartiano…. I’m always with interesting people. The other day I was with Scott and his girlfriend, Jamie Lynn-Sigler. Then I was with Puff one night at dinner at the Gramercy.” (Two, Three, Four-for mentioning the Wavery Inn and the Gramercy in the same day)
3.) Monday, September 17th: “I had dinner at Butter with Diana Ross’s son Evan Ross, and a bunch of my friends and a couple of big model girls…Monday nights are rocking stronger than ever. We had Terrence Howard, Kimora Lee, Russell Simmons, and a whole bunch of race-car drivers like Jeff Gordon and Edie Irvine and Jimmy Johnson. Cuba Gooding Jr. was there. They come up to my table and say hi.” (8 count them, 8 name drops, plus one for the models, brings total to 13).
4.) Saturday, September 15: “…then I went to Nobu…That’s like a family place for me. One of my best friends is Robert De Niro’s son, so I’ve been going there since the day it opened. They take care of me very well there.
Total Name Drops: 14 (This has to be a record for “The New York Diet” piece the magazine runs).
For the full interview on Richie’s hip eating habits go here.
We’re pretty sure it’s going to take a lot more than one new club opening to “change new york’s nightlife”, but we are hoping that Richie surprises us all and proves our doubts wrong.
