Ivrea Carnival

Ivrea Carnival
Similar to La Tomatina in Spain, this lesser known food fight is held in Ivrea, Italy. This orange-throwing event has its origins in the middle ages representing a feudal/lord fight. The original lord, Rainieri di Biandrate believed he could sleep with any bride on her wedding night, also gave beans to poor families, but they didn't accept them. Instead they threw them into the street. Soon after, instead of beans, girls started throwing oranges at any boys that they liked who were passing by. The young guys retaliated and the battle found its beginning. Now, the festival is celebrated by two opposing teams. The "Evil" team is shuttled in carriages-who symbolize the guards of the evil lord, and the rest are on foot-who represent the commoners. When: Saturday-Monday February 9-February 11, 2013 Where: Piazza Ottinetti, Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele, Piazza del Rondolino, Il Borghetto, and Centro Storico in Ivrea, Italy Participation is FREE! (Must provide your own oranges) For more information, go HERE! [Photo via]
