Day Tripper: Volume Two: Sleepy Hollow, New York
I suppose my little travel guide for July 4th is turning into a discover New York series, so please forgive me if you don’t love NY (not just tourists have those t-shirts). But, instead of looking elsewhere for new and exciting places, this series will open your eyes to all the beauty and exciting places hiding right under your nose. Second Stop: Sleepy Hollow, NY
That’s right Sleepy Hollow, which inspired the infamous “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by writer Washington Irving and later film adaptation by Tim Burton starring Johnny Depp, ::sigh:: If all that isn’t enticing, I don’t know what is.

What to see:
Besides the lush beauty that envelopes this quaint little town along the Hudson River, there is a rich history amidst the greenery, which makes this town unique. You might want to check out Philipsburg Manor, which is a restored 17th-century farm, owned by the Philipse family, complete with a beautifully intact Dutch manor house. The Rockefellers spent much time in the area, the house and gardens at Kykuit is a part of their estate, containing beautiful works of art. Artwork by Chagall and Matisse also decorate the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, also constructed by the Rockefellers. You might also want to check out the Rockefeller State Preserve, containing a 24-acre lake for some more physically engaging activities. A walk on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway, might also prove interesting in terms of visiting the old Dutch cemetery, while retracing Ichabod Crane’s footsteps.
For food you might want to head over to the upscale Blue Hill at Stone Barns, with its seasonal-ingredient driven menus will prove to be a valuable culinary experience. Sure it’s expensive, but you’re saving money on the entire weekend.
