Food Truck Frenzy: Hula Girl

by GABRIELLE BLUESTONE · May 1, 2013

This review was a real struggle. Not a struggle to write, but rather a struggle to decide if we really wanted to reveal how amazing this truck is and face even longer lines next time we go...but Hula Girl's Hawaiian fare is so delicious, it felt selfish to keep it to ourselves.

    Open Since: July, 2011

Why we like it: DC, while a cultural town, doesn't have many strong Hawaiian offerings - or even many Hawaiian offerings in general. Hula Girl, a vintage looking truck with wood paneling and a surfboard on top, fills that gap with mouthwatering, generous portions of fresh, delicious fare that will have you saying "Aloha."

The Menu: Hula Girl's standout item is the Mixed Plate, a $13 teriyaki beef, chicken, and pork confection paired with sticky, sticky rice and mac salad or tossed salad (we recommend the mac salad). We also recommend the $11 Pork Belly Bahn Mi, which comes with Hula Girl's savory pickled daikon and carrots (also a side offering). For those not inclined to meat, the tofu teriyaki with sticky rice is a solid option. For dessert, try the Haupia, a coconut pudding with toasted coconut and macadamia nuts.
