The Obamas Are On Mt. Desert Island, ME Beating the D.C. Heat

by MADELEINE STARKEY · July 16, 2010

Because the First Family cannot make a move without the whole world knowing about it (how does that make you feel, Bo?) it has been leaked that the Obamas have left the District this weekend to head to one of Maine's best kept secrets: Mount Desert Island.

While the Seal Harbor Club might make an exception, chances are the Obamas would be unable to head to the SHC's club house, enjoy the best egg salad sandwiches ever created, or take a dip in the gigantic, salt water swimming pool.

But there are other many other options for the Obamas while they trek around the island that is home to Bar Harbor.

Eating: Abel's is a Mt. Desert Island classic.  Many would say they serve the best lobsters and clams, all of which are caught locally.  In fact Abel's is also a lobster pound, where you can pop in and grab some fresh, live lobsters to cook at home.

Hiking (and eating): A Jordan Pond trip is the perfect combination of exercise and outdoor dining.  Hike around Jordan Pond and return to the Jordan Pond House where you can sit outside on the lawn and enjoy some freshly baked popovers.

Boating: Off the coast of Mt. Desert are a few smaller islands that, while separated by the Atlantic, are a short ferry ride away.  Despite their physical separation, the Cranberry Isles are as much a part of the Mt. Desert experience as the "main land."

Nature-ing: Acadia National Park runs through the middle of the Island.  It's a National Park for a reason: it's amazing.  Climbing Cadillac Mountain is a favorite Acadia activity.
