14. Alexis Portilla: Particles Alexis states that he is always searching for the dominant characteristics or the basic identity for a new body of work. The vocabulary of shapes and images within his memory are a guide to begin all new work. Regardless of media or perceived subject matter, this approach allows him to gain access to the underlying architecture of a painting. Sometimes he explores atmosphere and color with minimal imagery, other times he uses line and deeply layered mark making.
