The Optus Clever Buoy

Clever BuoyAustralia, known for its gorgeous beaches and first-class surf culture, also happens to have the most fatal shark attacks in the world. To help counter this problem, Optus, Australia's second largest mobile network, created the Clever Buoy. Clever Buoy uses a special sonar system to detect a shark by measuring its unique movement pattern in the water. After a shark presence is identified, the smart buoy sends an alert to the nearest lifeguard's mobile, while also sharing the information with scientists. Optus hopes to expand from its prototype to the rest of Australia's coastline and to help the rest of the world rethink shark detection methods, which often involve the trapping, harming, or even killing of sharks.
