Don't rush to the salon at the smallest sight of roots - Brandon says to "grow the roots out natural - let them show about an inch. Think downtown hippy." If you're thinking of lightening your hair for the winter months, try toning down the summer highlights by one or two tones. Darker tones in the winter are more fitting.
