Surf Film Announced for “Summer Sunday Classics” Film Series at Sole East

Solé East Resort and the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF), in conjunction with photographer Bruce Weber, present Big Wednesday at the ’Summer Sunday Classics’ film series on August 7. Attendance, which will be shown outdoors after sunset, is free and open to the public. The Backyard Restaurant at Solé East will host a casual, pre-screening barbecue and cocktail hour beginning at 7:00 p.m. where food and drink may be purchased. August 7: Big Wednesday (1978), by John Milius. Hailed by many surfers as one of the all-time greatest Hollywood surf movies, Big Wednesday chronicles the lives and adventures of three care-free California surfers from the 60's to the 70's. While the friends surf, party, and anticipate the long-awaited big swell that will be their surfing mecca, the Vietnam War and the pains of adulthood cast dark shadows on their idyllic lifestyle. Loosely based on the writer's and director's real experiences in Malibu, Big Wednesday’s authentic and breathtaking surf scenes make it a long-standing favorite. Rated PG. ’It is a wonderful part of film history to show movies outdoors on a screen or against a building somewhere. What luck to have two of Herbie Fletcher’s extraordinary surf classics Supernatural and Savage Beast projected at Solé East with the sounds of the ocean nearby. The minute I met Herbie, his wife Dibbi, and their kids Nathan and Christian - I wanted to be adopted by them! The great thing about Herbie’s films is that after you see them you honestly believe that you can surf Mavericks. Jon Milius’s film Big Wednesday stars one of my friends who I photographed when I got my first camera - Jan Michael Vincent. These films are some of the reasons why surfing has grown into such a popular sport. I want to thank Karen Arikian and the Hamptons International Film Festival for indulging us in the luxury of allowing us to watch these films on the big outdoor screen this summer in Montauk,’ says Bruce Weber.
