Essential Etiquette for Polo

Essential Etiquette for PoloHere are some of the essentials to keep in mind before heading to a polo match. 1. Know the basics of polo Chukka? Champagne Divot Stomp? Handicap? If you don't already know these terms, it is time to learn the vocabulary for polo. You cannot truly enjoy the game without understanding the rules governing the sport. It only takes a few minutes to learn, we promise. And that's all you need to be a (newbie) polo connoisseur. 2. Wear flat shoes - or at least try to! We know we just went over the importance of style at polo matches, so heels might be your go-to choice. However, a polo match involves a lot of walking and standing for spectators. You do not want to exhaust yourself early on with a pair of uncomfortable shoes. Also, there is a tradition of divot stomping during half time. You are invited to gather on the playing field and stomp down the turf. If you are still not convinced, remember: flats are the symbol of preppy fashion. 3. Bring binoculars and refreshments A polo match is held on a large playing field and the actions of players occur at a fast pace. Binoculars will probably be the best bet for you to follow the match closely and view the players' moves. Refreshments like fruits, cheese, and salad come in handy along with wine and champagne during the event. Remember, polo is about the participation of spectators as much as it is about the players and ponies. So actively engage in social interaction while watching the match. Share food and drinks with your friends and fellow spectators. [Photo via @enggirl99]
