There's a funny story behind this tissue paper-like gown that got the then 19-year-old a ton of public attention when she wore it to a party in '93. The sheer, silvery number (which was paired with nothing but low-slung black underwear and a cigarette—of course) was originally designed in gold by Liza Bruce for Kate's fellow fashionista Melanie Ward. Her pal Corinne Day (the photog who put Kate on the map) then requested a silver version for a shoot she was doing with Linda Evangelista. Since Melanie, Corinne, and Kate were roommates at the time, Kate borrowed it from her photographer friend and had to return it to the designer afterwards. Let's hope she didn't spill any champagne that night!
