Breaking: Meghan & Harry Are Officially Ditching The Royal Family

by Stephanie Maida · January 8, 2020

After years of being dragged through the mud by the British media (sorry, but we love them here in the States!), Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have shooketh the U.K. by announcing that they're officially ditching the Royal Family.

Today, in an Instagram post (oh, if any of the King Henrys could see the way we receive royal proclamations today), the Sussexes declared, "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

Stepping back! Financially independent! Diana would be so proud.

But the fact that we'll no longer be analyzing Meghan's outfits and body language at official royal events isn't the only big news here. The long IG caption also stated that Meghan, Harry, and their son would be balancing their "time between the United Kingdom and North America." Does that mean they'll be looking for a modest castle in Meghan's native Los Angeles? Will we get juicy paparazzi photos of them shopping for groceries at Erewhon?! Or does it mean they're heading to her adopted city of Toronto, where Meghan lived while she was filming Suits? They did just spend the holidays in Canada, and since it's technically a commonwealth, it might be a less audacious move in the eyes of the Queen.

In any case, good for them!

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA
