The Real Anavrin Market From "You" Season 2...

by Stephanie Maida · December 27, 2019

If you've yet to binge the entire second season of You, everyone's favorite cringe-worthy stalker show that somehow makes the creepiest would-be criminal on Criminal Minds seem kinda sexy, don't worry - there won't be any major spoilers ahead. (But hello, what are you waiting for? Get on it!)

Before the season even began, fans learned that our murderous leading man (played by Penn Badgley) would be jetting off to Los Angeles, a city which serves as the antithesis of everything the clout-hating, social media-disdaining "intellectual" Joe stands for. And, of course, that he'd be finding a new love interest to obsess over, conveniently named - get this - Love

Much like the start of You's first season, Joe ends up meeting his new crush at work. Last time, it was at his beloved bookstore. This time he finds Love at Anavrin, a high-end grocery store that is so L.A., it hurts. As Joe (who is actually going by Will these days - long story) describes in his voice-over on his way to apply for a job there, grocery stores in L.A. are "a pristine, non-GMO Disneyland. And king among these is Anavrin. Come for the spring lettuce mix, stay for the perfect life that could be yours if you just spend enough and quit gluten, you fucking asshole." And yes, Anavrin is "Nirvana" spelled backwards. As a New Yorker, it's hard not to empathize with his plight here.

But considering how much of a role the organic hellscape plays in this season, we couldn't help but wonder: Is Anavrin a real place? Well, kind of!

As any Angeleno would've guessed, the shop is likely based on the uber trendy, celebrity-frequented Erewhon Market, a similarly obnoxious destination for organic produce and raw vegan pizza. It is also a riff on "Nowhere" spelled backwards, and sports rustic signage similar to the technically fictional shop on the show.

It's unclear whether the scenes were actually filmed on-location at any of the Erewhon outposts throughout L.A., but a quick browse through the chain's Instagram account proves that the vibes are pretty on-point. So if you're looking to pick up some cold-pressed hemp juice and a new psycho boyfriend, this is your spot!

You Season 2 is streaming now on Netflix!
