Slide #8

And in case you haven't gotten to them yet, there's still time to check out these awesome art shows!:
Phil Frost Solace of the Sword
New York artist Phil Frost is exhibiting his mixed media on cavas work at ACE Gallery. He was first known in the early 1990s for his street art in New York, which he later brought to Los Angeles. In fact, he altered a Samuel Bayer's billboard in Los Angeles, only to have it stolen by someone who hopefully has the space to display the billboard work properly. Frost transitioned to gallery works, where he uses object constructions with multi-layered portraits and graphic symbols laid out on a canvas. His pieces almost seem like a comical depiction of an urban tribe, but the multi-colored patterns are nothing to laugh at. Find Phil Frost's exhibit, Solace of the Sword, at ACE Gallery. July 18, 2013 - December, 2013 ACE Gallery Los Angeles 5514 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036 [Photo via]
Candice Breitz: The Woods
The Woods is a video trilogy based on three major film producing cities: Hollywood (Los Angeles, USA), Bollywood (Mumbai, India), and Nollywood (Lagos, Nigeria). In the first two parts of Candice Breitz's trilogy, The Audition (filmed in Los Angeles) and The Rehearsal(filmed in Mumbai), showcase current aspiring and working child actors. Breitz wanted to capture the process of how these children mimic adult actions, from applying makeup to copying adult speech that somehow merge into their own understanding of what adulthood is. The last part of the trilogy, The Interview (filmed in Lagos), features two adult Nollywood stars who attained celebrity status through their own mimicry of children behavior. Blending in the worlds of the performance of adulthood and the performance of childhood, Breitz's video installations and photographic works capture the difficulty of maintaining "a sense of selfhood" in the cinematic world, as well as everyday life. Check out The Woods on Saturday at Perry Rubenstein Gallery. October 19, 2013 - November 30, 2013 Perry Rubenstein Gallery 1215 N. Highland Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90038 [Photo via]
James Welling Monograph
Throughout James Welling's 35 years of experience, he stretched and challenged what he could do with photography from themes of realism and transparency, to the material and chemical nature of photography. The result comes out in a diverse display of images found in Welling's exhibit, Monograph, at LACMA. See an accumulation of over three decades of James Welling's work at the Hammer Museum this weekend. September 29, 2013 - January 12, 2014 Hammer Museum 10899 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90024 [Photo via]
