Grub
The fact that I've heard the word "unpretentious" used to describe restaurants like Bottega Louie and Osteria Mozza (and trust me, we're not knocking the excellent food at either place) should probably let you know how devalued that word has become in this city. But then you duck down a side-street off Santa Monica & Vine to find Grub, a destination so utterly and legitimately unpretentious in both setting and cuisine as to feel like you're sitting on the garden patio (or in the living room) of some cozy little house far away from Hollywood, chowing down on the kind of comfort food so sinfully creative that you'd have to wonder what else they're growing in the garden. Seriously, though, if I didn't know that chef/owners Betty Fraser and Denise DeCarlo were lovely, personable and law abiding folks, I might question where the inspiration for such genius items as the "Crack" Bacon Quesadilla, made with their good-enough-to-devour-on-it's-own Crack (candied) Bacon with cheddar cheese, roasted onions and homemade apple pear drizzle, or the insanely savory White Truffle Burger or cayenne-infused Southern Mac and Cheese. And the Fosse cookies, with bits of salty, crunchy potato chips mixed liberally into gooey chocolate chip cookies, are such a why-didn't-I-think-of-that amazing idea that you'll be telling your friends about it. Seriously. [View Menu + Book Now] [via]
