The Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood(land) Sign

Location: Commonwealth Canyon Drive

History: The world-renowned Hollywood sign is a recognizable landmark, originally meant as an advertisement for a real estate agency in when it was first erected 1923, then as "Hollywoodland" (the "land" was dropped in 1949). It has since become an iconic symbol associated with the entertainment industry, glamor, and celebrity, standing as a beacon of hope for the countless young aspiring models, actors, and musicians who flock to Hollywood to pursue their dreams. Unfortunately the sign was the site of the untimely end to one young actress' journey to the land of glitz and glam.

Haunting: In the early 30s, a young struggling actress named Peg Entwistle arrived in Hollywood with dreams of becoming a star when she was finally cast in the film Thirteen Women. But it was not the big break she had hoped for, testing poorly amongst audiences and with many of her scenes edited out from the final reel. After facing such difficulty in getting a break into show business, the failure of the film quite literally sent her over the edge. On September 16, 1932 she reached her wits end and committed suicide by jumping to her death from the "H" of the Hollywoodland sign.

Since her death, numerous park rangers have reported sightings, usually in the dead of night and especially when there is fog, of a young blond woman dressed in 1930s garb who appears noticeably distraught near the Hollywood sign. According to their very similar accounts, the mysterious blond believed to be the ghost of Peg Entwistle vanishes into thin air as they approach her.
