Yinka Shonibare MBE, Addio del Passato
History, we know, tends to repeat itself. And such is the case at British-born, Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE's newest exhibition at the James Cohan Gallery, "Addio del Passato" (translation: Farewell of the Past). Through sculptures of bygone sex toys and anti-masturbation devices, photography of simulated historical suicides, an operatic video installation, and costumes constructed in period detail, Shinibare uses a wide range of mediums to explore sexuality, love, yearning, and romantic destiny.
