Alfred Steiner, "Pour"

Alfred Steiner, "Pour"
And how is this use - or, rather, absence of - background employed in other works? JM: This work [to the left] is by Alfred Steiner.  And his works incorporate a lot of the empty background that really makes his mastery of color and texture pop out. And what is the power of negative space? JM: I think it makes you think of your internal world.  Or it just piques the curiosity.... I think when something is left blank - [as with] a blank piece of paper or a blank canvas - there's a lot of possibility.  Not everything has been filled in for you, so you're left with a little bit of space to work with.
