"Best 2K I Ever Spent" The Box Celebrates Its 4 Year Anniversary With The Scissor Sisters

by Mara Siegler · February 17, 2011

Simon Hammerstein's burlesque wet dream in the Lower East Side turned 4 this Valentine's Day. After a friends and family styled dinner at partner Serge Becker's new *Jamaican restaurant Miss Lily's, everyone headed over to Chrystie St. to celebrate another year of highs. Hugh Jackman and his wife, Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Alan Cumming, Rachel Weisz, Daniel Craig were just a few of the attendees who toasted the venue as the Scissor Sisters took to the stage (directly after performing at Marc Jacob's Fashion Week party) to rock the crowd.

Like all clubs, or ahem, "dinner theaters," the turn of the century meets dildos-styled joint had it's series of ups-and-downs over the years.  They suffered rumors and lawsuits of sexual harassment and targeting over allowing smoking despite the city's ban.  Yet, the space managed to still book events, draw celebs (including Axl Rose) and maintain buzz as the "it" place to be long after most places would have been deemed lame or "over" simply because of the rapidity and fickle nature that's always seeks the new and undiscovered when it comes to New York nightlife cycle. In NY club years, The Box is geriatric.

But geriatric doesn't necessarily mean over. Look at Betty White.  What's more?  They not only still draw crowds, but are expanding.  Plans are in the works to open a louche sister venue overseas in London's old Raymond Revue Bar.

*Simon's partner, nightlife impresario Serge Becker (Joe's Pub, Café Select, and La Esquina) has recently opened a new restaurant, an uber exclusive members only Jamaican affair that has soft opened to select elites and employs former staff from The Box. Spotted this past Monday pre-box celebration: Simon Hammerstein, Armin Armini, Sean MacPherson, EMM Group's Mark Birnbaum, Jefferson Hack, and more.

The anniversary event and performance by Scissor Sisters is just one evening that dazzled.
