"Bright Lights, Big City" by Jay McInerney
Jay McInerney's influential debut illustrated the decadence of the '80s in a way that still echoes to this day. He offers an eerily accurate description of clubbing until the sun comes out, doing drugs in bathroom stalls, and the quest for a late-night hookup, and that's just in the first chapter. The story's 20-something main character is disillusioned by the way his life has turned out, with a uninspiring job and a failed relationship, but parties hard at night at places like The Odeon to cope with his unfulfilled existence.
