The 2nd Annual Black & Gold Holiday Party is a gala benefit for Viva Favela, a social justice operation to empower communities living in favelas, the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ABOUT VIVA FAVELA In the 1970s, no camera existed in any of the favelas in Rio. Children growing up in the communities believed that no one could ever perceive them as anything but violent drug dealers. Viva Favela changed that by providing cameras, journalistic training, and a platform to tell positive stories about the beautiful lives of people in the favelas, the shantytowns that helped create samba and the intoxicating mixture of culture that includes Carneval parades. Their positive stories have been picked up by mainstream media and continue to help the people of these areas be heard and live empowered lives.
