High Line Open Studios announces its 2010 open studios season to be held October 14-17. The event will kick-off with a celebratory preview on Thursday, October 14 from 6:00 - 9:00pm followed by three days of open artists’ studios from Friday, October 15 thru Sunday, October 17. During that time, art spaces will be open to the public daily from noon to 6pm.
High Line Open Studios was created by artists for artists to raise awareness of the multitude of studios scattered among the galleries of Chelsea. Since its inception in 2007, this annual event has grown from a single building on 26th Street to include studios that span the entire length of the High Line from 14th Street north to West 30th Street. ’The goal of High Line Open Studios is twofold: to allow local emerging and established artists the opportunity to open their studio doors to show their artwork in a democratic forum; and to provide the public with the opportunity to enjoy art at its origin,’ states one of its founders, Xanda McCagg.
Considered by some as the art center of the world, visitors are given the rare opportunity to gain access to a multitude of artists, styles, and mediums and see first hand the creative spaces generally only open by appointment. Visitors can preview participating artists via the web to create a self-guided art tour while enjoying the unique urban architecture of the High Line Park. This open format encourages dialogue between artists and enthusiasts allowing visitors to gain first hand knowledge about the creative process. Collectors have the ability to purchase works directly from the artists’ studio inventory, giving them the opportunity to be the first to discover new talent before it makes its way to the gallery walls.
