Mark DeMaio resides and works in New York City.WHAT: ABSURD NOTIONS: an exhibition of new work by DeMaio—his second solo show at Synchronicity Space, following a conglomeration of quasi-Surrealist portraiture titled Practice of Injury in Private in February of 2006. In Absurd Notions, opening to the public on Thursday, September 9, DeMaio conflates dream and nightmare, comingling mainstream iconography and pastiche, steeped in the early 20th-century school of the Surrealist forefathers. His most recent body of work—a collective of 20 and some odd animated canvases—unites his interest in popular kitsch, the duplicitous emblems of childhood innocence, and spiritual allusions, such as the Passion, metaphysical philosophy, and phallic imagery. The majority of works (all executed in oil) call to mind the distorted compositions of Dali and Bacon and the more somber underpinnings of World War II degenerate art and German Expressionism. WHEN: Wednesday, September 8; cocktail reception and exclusive viewing from 6 to 8pm. The event is being catered by Chef Patrick Connolly of world renowned BoBo, in New York City. WHERE: Synchronicity Space 106 West 13th Street New York, NY 10011 GUESTS: Beth de Woody, Bettina Prentice, Olivier Belot, Muffinhead, Patrick McMullen, Larry "Ratso" Sloman who wrote the Howard Stern books, Nightlife legend Lee Chappell, Model Dayton Schlosser, playwrite Fred Giacinto, musicians Corey TuT, Jenna Tores, Sweetie, and a glamourous list of too many to mention.
