Opening Reception
March 31st 8pm-3am
Does anybody remember NYC of old?? Where there was a grittiness that just defined this city & no matter how scared you were going into some neighborhoods to party, it was all worth it once you arrived there. On this night we'll try to recreate some of that grittiness through Art, Music and of course you the people.
So we invite you to join the Socialites, Ravers, Punks, Drags queens, Hipsters & Club Kids taking part in becoming the nuisances that our former Mayor so wanted to be rid of.
For you viewing pleasure we have art from Steven Cogle who's paintings channel and pays respect to his tribal West Indian heritage crossed with the urban blight of New York City & because Art & Music go hand in hand
For your Musical pleasure we have 5 of the nicest DJs around one of them Being DIGITAL GIPSY from France. They'll all be spinning the best in Electrobreak, Drum-n-bass, Triphop, Idm, Funk, Ragga jungle, Reggaeton, Techno/Breaks, Acid, & Dubstep.
This is a show not to be missed.
Below we have the bios of the participants
ART: STEVEN COGLE
Steven Cogle’s paintings are deeply based on personal and world-wide
current events. ’A lot of bad stuff went down in East New York when I
was growing up. By layering the paint on the canvas I am also layering
the experience of what I saw: tragedy, loss, confusion, hope, prayer,
fantasy, and survival. In describing his work Steven has this to say ’My work is authentic, honest and genuine." I've got to go with what I know.’
MUSIC:
DIGITAL GIPSY - electrobreak/drum-n-bass (LIVE) - FRANCE
(Mobil Unit/South Side Crew) This guy has been pretty much on non-stop tour all over the world spreading messages of sound and spirit for over half a decade. Digital Gipsy plays his own sound live! This will be a rarity not to be missed!
MADARO - tribal free tekno / acid 160bpm+
Madaro has been gracing sound systems for an untold many years playing such events as MayDay in Tompkins Square Park, Unified Vibes in Union Square, Burning Man, and countless festivals all over the globe. This guy has a sick record collection of original releases you will likely hear no where else. This will be the closing set to drive it home for the real enthusiasts.
HOLOGRAPHIK - minimal/techno/breaks
Andrew Hologram has been mixing music since the mid 90's performing as The Driver, Visitor 1-3-9, and more recently Holographik. Holographik is the result of overexposure to digital music after mixing strictly vinyl for over a decade. From Techno to Minimal to Breaks and beyond Holographik has filtered through over 40,000 tracks in 2010 alone and will leave you vibrating in a holographic state.
MAMAJUANA - dubstep/ragga jungle/reggaeton
The DJ formally known as Nobody is now Mamajuana. Mamajuana, like the Dominican liquor concoction of the same name, can be smooth as well as harsh. This genre trotting DJ feeds off the vibes from the crowd and responds with equally strong tracks from styles in Ragga Jungle, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Hardcore, Dub, Reggae, even Reggaeton. 100% Vinyl set for your aural pleasure!
SUBMERGER - triphop/idm/funk
Submerger started in the electronic music scene in early 2000 with releases under the group name, Tocsin. Influenced by much of the funky grooves and horn driven music of the 70’s Submerger started experimenting with music that just makes people feel good. Submerger has played monthlies at venues such as Porch NYC and The Rose Live in Brooklyn NY.
