Description
Anagnorisis and the White Rabbit's White Box are pleased to announce REMAIN, a solo exhibition of new oil paintings by Yuri Leonov. Yuri Leonov has always been interested in the relationship between nature’s course and the constant attempts by human beings to influence it. He became much more immersed in the subject after being diagnosed with Crohnʼs disease, having been forced to deal with human limitations first hand. Living with a constant dependency on recently manmade advancements caused him to wonder what is truly natural and what is not. At times these questions channel into a place of a personal struggle, and become correlated with the juxtaposition of strength and weakness on physical and emotional levels. Thus Leonov’s art is all connected, in one way or another, to the relationship of man, nature, and technology. Because this issue is not localized to himself, Leonov attempts to explore it with his art on a global scale. Each of Leonov’s works are part of a series; creating a rhythmic and dynamic composition is commonly the starting point of his process. Frequently his work attempts to link its conceptual content with its formal qualities, usually through surface treatment, dictated by the specific demands of the subject matter. The symbolism contained within Leonovʼs work tends to pull from art historical references ranging from ancient mythology to architecture, or simply by alluding to old master paintings. Leonov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia where he showed a unique talent for art at a young age. In his adolescence he moved to New York where he attended the school of the arts, LaGuardia High school. This past winter, he received his BFA from The School of Visual Arts. His work has already been featured in a number of group shows, and was recently featured in The Visual Opinion magazine. He is a part of the recently formed Artillery collective which will be having their first exhibit at Dacia Gallery in June, 2011.
