In the aftermath of 9/11, Trinity Church and St. Paul’s became sanctuaries for those seeking consolation after the destruction of the Twin Towers. Located directly across from the World Trade Center, St. Paul’s Chapel was shielded from falling debris by a sycamore tree, whose roots are immortalized as a ten-foot-tall bronze sculpture in the south yard of Trinity Church. For eight months after the attacks, ’the little chapel that stood’ was home to an extraordinary volunteer relief effort, becoming a place of renewal and inspiration for Ground Zero’s physically and spiritually weary.
