Description
In conjunction with the exhibition Taylor Mead, Churner and Churner will screen two recent documentaries that investigate the artist's life and his status as a legend of the Lower East Side. Saturday, February 11, 7PM Excavating Taylor Mead (2005) directed by William Kirkley Filmed over a four-year period and spanning nearly eight decades, Excavating Taylor Mead follows Taylor from his eviction from his Lower East Side apartment to co-starring in Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes. Filtered through his life choices, the movie is an endearing character study of someone who has lived a unique artistic path. Best put by Taylor, "It's the opposite end of the Robert Evans spectrum." Featuring many clips from the early independent film movement, including never before seen Warhol footage, the film considers the fate of those who helped bring about the new American cinema of the 1960s and raises questions as to the sacrifices we make for art. Excavating Taylor Mead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was named one of the top ten films of 2005 by Artforum.
