| Description |
Discover the life and accomplishments of Andrew Jackson Downing during a lecture by Robert Twombly. Downing is still known today as the ’father’ of American landscape design and was a pioneering proponent of the movement to create urban parks. He was one of the most outspoken advocates of national beautification through his four best-selling books and as editor of The Horticulturist.
Twombly, a former professor of Architectural History at the Spritzer School of Architecture, will focus on Downing’s accomplishments including his design philosophy and its applications, the influence of his plan for the ’Public Grounds’ in Washington, D.C. on the construction of Central Park and his concept of ’republicanism.’
