Phil Donahue, news-anchor Deborah Norville, 2009 Nobel winner Carol Greider, and discoverer of DNA James Watson, were among the luminaries out celebrating. A highlight of the evening was when Grammy award winning violinist Joshua Bell performed with celebrated classical pianist Frederic Chiu.

The Double Helix Medals Dinner is both a fundraiser to support Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and a chance to give out medals to "recognize exceptional individuals who have dedicated their lives to raising awareness of the importance of genetics research for improving the health of people everywhere" in three categories, Scientific Research, Humanitarianism and Corporate Philanthropy.
