It's really just a difference in types of angst. Like it's all existential crises but while NYU's angst is more: "Will my genius be recognized?" Columbia's is more "fiat ars pereat mundus."
NYU is all about showing how much cooler you are than everyone else and Columbia is all about showing everyone else how much lamer they are than you.
