AIDS and Activism
Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, and he immediately immersed himself in raising funds and awareness for the disease. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission, according to the website, is:
"...to sustain, expand, and protect the legacy of Keith Haring, his art, and his ideals. In accordance with Keith’s wishes, the Foundation concentrates its giving in two areas: The support of organizations which provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children and the support of organizations which engage in education, prevention and care with respect to AIDS and HIV infection."

After his death, Madonna held a benefit concert for Haring and donated all the money raised that night to various AIDS foundations.
