What do you miss about Area the most?
Serge Becker: The freedom.
EG: Yeah, I was just going to say it was lawless New York, and so you had the freedom to do things that you couldn't do today. And when I say that, you could do virtually anything without the bureaucracy that exists today. There was this tremendous freedom, but also the mixture of people that went to a place, gay, straight, black, white, green, blue, it was much more mixed. And it wasn't about money, that was the other thing. Today you have bottle service, and money seems to rule the 'who gets in.' In those days if you went to a club, you had to make an effort creatively to be a part of the club. It wasn't about how rich you were. But freedom is the correct thing.
