What was it like seeing your novel come to life?

Joe HillJoe Hill: "Well, I don't know that I have anything to say about the novel being brought to life that a million writers haven't already said about this experience, but it was exciting, wonderful, and a little disorientating because you are seeing this story that only existed in your head and suddenly you can walk right into it. Scenes, places, and locations that have only existed in my mind were now really there. That was very surprising and strange." How well do you think the cast and filmmakers did at accurately portraying your vision? JH: "Alexandre Aja directed a painfully beautiful film that was very true to the spirit of the novel and retains a lot of the central elements of the story. But, there are two ways to screw up an adaptation: You can do a movie that has nothing to do with the source material, or you can do something that is so faithful to the material that it's completely dead on the screen. I told Alexandre Aja that I had done my version of the story and I hoped that he would feel free to do his version. I feel like he did, and made something that's really live on the screen, it's very exciting." [Joe Hill]
