Pumpkins and Squash aren't the only vegetables worthy of carving. Turnips also make good night watchmen. Hang them in a row from the porch, lamppost, or anywhere else a pumpkin won't fit!
Here's how:
What you Need:
Turnips
wax pencil
Kitchen Knife and Utility Knife
linoleum-cutting (lino) tool
Mellon Baller
Twine
Tea candle (if desired)
Directions:
1. Cut off the turnips' tops with a kitchen knife, then hollow them out with a melon baller.
2. Draw a face with a wax pencil and then carve it with a utility knife.
3. Use the linoleum-cutting (lino) tool to cut small hole for the eyes, nose etc.
4. Again use the lino tool to also make small holes on both sides of turnip.
5. Cut a piece of twine and slip it through the holes and knot
6. Then put a tea candle inside to illuminate. (if desired)
