Interview: Photographer Victoria Janashvili Talks The Beauty Of 'Curves'

How long did this project take you in its entirety?How long have you been interested in photography? What inspired you to make the shift from law to photography?

I'm guessing how naive and silly this might sound, but since I was a little girl I wanted to help make the world into a better, kinder place. That was why I went to law in the first place - I wanted to work for the UN. Later I realized that an image can be a much more direct and strong way for me to make the difference. I grew to think that most of the resolutions and discussions that lawmakers make end up being just words and paperwork, when an image is more successful at triggering emotions. Would you say you made an easy transition to Manhattan? I moved here from London seven years ago. At first it was a challenge - small apartments, loud subway cars and the crowds of tourists on the streets. I learned to love New York once I started working here and realized how driven and ambitions people here are and how things get done so quickly and efficiently. It was also important to find the neighborhood where I felt I could belong. Now, since I met my friends and found my place, I consider myself a New Yorker. [Photo courtesy of Victoria Janashvili]
