Do you have a party trick? A surefire way to get people chatting or save a conversation when mingling?

There's no quick trick. You have to invite the right mix of people and create a good atmosphere for them before they arrive. Know what they love to eat and drink. Tons of candles, low lighting, great and surprising music (I like to play LPs on old-school leather suitcase turntables, everything from the Stones to Horace Silver to Dinah Washington). And obviously, never run out of wine.

Actually, I would say this. Maybe have one question for the dinner table that will make the dinner memorable, and keep it from being all just gossip and chatter. Something timely and big, but interesting. Although it's not exactly the worst thing in the world if the question starts a fist fight at the party either. At least it would be a memorable evening.
