Thanks to this club opening up in 1983, the Gothic Revival Episcopal Church building that this notorious disco and rock club opened up in was fully and thoroughly deconsecrated. It reached its peak fame (and infamy) in the '90s due to its techno, goth, and drug scene. After more than a few squabbles with the authorities, the Limelight NYC was shut down by the police in 1996, opening again a few more subsequent times that in the end only disappointed.
