All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go: Mackenzie Newcomb

by Christie Grimm · May 11, 2020

Who isn't absolutely, completely, hopelessly desperate for an excuse to get dressed up these days?

Next up in our "dress your best" challenge is Miss Mackenzie Newcomb - our resident Rent The Runway savant, pop culture pro, book worm, dog mom, caviar pusher and all around hilarious human being. Surely, crashing at home has never looked so chic!

    What are you wearing?
I'm wearing ML Monique Lhuillier. Her dresses are so unapologetically feminine and as a lifelong girly-girl I love that.

Where are you riding out the storm?
Marshfield, Massachusetts! The small coastal town I grew up in. I feel enormously privileged to be surrounded by so much natural beauty right now.

    Drink of choice these days?
On a day-to-day basis I drink Louis Jadot Chardonnay (I love wine from Burgundy) and La Vieille Ferme Rouge (an inexpensive French red blend I buy in bulk.) This weekend I also tried La Cle De La Femme Champagne for the first time and it was AMAZING. I pretty much have the tiny French section of my neighborhood wine store memorized! But I have to admit, my mom drinks "Rosé All Day" un-ironically and I'm starting to think she is on to something....

How many books have you read lately?
I've read 19 books since arriving in Marshfield mid-March. That is a lot, even for me. My book club, Bad Bitch Book Club, is running a weekly romance challenge (co-hosted by Lily Herman) that has kept me very busy. My favorite so far has been Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid (all of her books are great.) We're also planning a celebrity memoir (virtual) meetup for the summer, so I listen to those on audio on Sophie's (my dog) walks. Highly recommend Demi Moore & Gabrielle Union's memoirs for piping hot tea!! If you're looking for something a little more intellectual, I suggest The Stationary Shop by Marjan Kamali. It's about a young couple living in Tehran, Iran in the political upheaval of the 1950s. I chose it as my book club's official book of the month to help our members find perspective in our current situations.

What's one little luxury of normal life you miss the most?
I miss meeting up with friends to do a group fitness class. I don't love working out, but having someone to hold me accountable to attending hot yoga/spin/dance is enormously helpful. Zoom classes are a bandaid! It makes my heart hurt even thinking about this - who knew it was possible to be nostalgic for reformer pilates??

What's the most fabulous thing you've done in quarantine so far?
Living in a beach town comes with huge benefits. I walk my dog on the beach everyday (not so glam in March, very glam in May.) I also order a lobster dish via takeout at least once a week. Lobster is my absolute favorite food and not nearly accessible enough in NY!! The restaurant closest to my house has 2 for $32 steamed lobster deal (with 2 sides each!!) They also have a lobster casserole worth selling your soul for. Blessed.

I've also been spending a lot of time with my family. I moved out at 18 and haven't spent more than a week home at a time since. It's an unimaginable luxury to be able to spend so much time with my parents, which never seemed like a possibility before.
