Live On, Live Long Exhibit Opened At No Romance Gallery And MAGIC

Other details: Last night the exhibit Live On, Live Long opened at both No Romance gallery and MAGIC. The exhibit features artists Gogy Esparza, Nick Sethi, Maggie Lee, Shawn Powers, Peter Sutherland, Jen Shear, and Weirdo Dave, who all use various mediums to reflect on the changing nature of New York over the last decade. Furthermore, the show taps on the perpetuating themes of gentrification and the effects of post-9/11 rebuilding, especially on creatives. Despite the oft-spoken sentiment of being pushed out, the show reinforces the idea that the creative spirit in NYC lives on. Artist Gogy Esparza, who was also one of the curators of the show, emphasized this point: "I ran into this music dude and he was telling us about his career success. He asked me what I was doing, and then asked what I really wanted to say. I said there's a void in contemporary art for an inner city voice. I thought an inner city voice in contemporary art is always refuted; it's always thought as lesser than fine art. But the minute someone from a more established background can adopt aesthetics or credos from the streets it becomes brilliant." Esparza, who had most of his work at No Romance gallery, also uses MAGIC as a studio as well as a barbershop. When asked why the show took two spaces rather than one, he simple stated "because there's a lack of unity."
