Disaronno Manhattan Cocktail Classic Happy Hour

Where: The Handy Liquor Bar Other details: To commemorate the last days of the 2014 Manhattan Cocktail Classic, the quite classic-in-it's-own-right Disaronno hosted a special happy hour at Matt Levine's latest hot spot, The Handy Liquor Bar in Soho. The smoky, old school ambiance of the subterranean lounge was complemented perfectly by the sultry sounds of jazz singer Dani Erin and the amber bite of the Italian, herb-infused amaretto. Throw in the savory snacks provided by the upstairs Chalk Point Kitchen, and it was one happy hour that turned Monday into fun-day. In between sips of the spicy, jalapeno-infused "Cast Iron" (served in a mason jar - always a plus) and the cherry-tinged "Duke Ellington Sour," we caught up with the Disaronno brand ambassador, Paul Sevigny, who shared some insight on the legendary liqueur. "We're a very classic brand. My grandfather has stories about Disaronno. So what we're doing now is really focusing on its modern mixability. You can make great cocktails with the liqueur itself, because of the flavor profile and the amount of proof, but the natural almond and vanilla lends very well to the mixability with other brown spirits, like bourbons, like rums. So when creating drinks, you can really make some interesting concoctions. It just shows the versatility of the brand. We're many things. You can make a great Disaronno Sour cocktail, where it's the star of the show, or create a Disaronno cocktail with another spirit, where you can see just how well it marries the flavors."
