...What's The Deal With The Birthday Cake At RH Guesthouse?

by Guest of A Guest · October 4, 2022

Gansevoort Street is certainly well on its way to being one of the most sophisticated stretches downtown.

RH Guesthouse, buffered by Loro Piana, Hermès and Pastis, is the latest spot to lend a hand in the Meatpacking District's luxe makeover. And certainly, the one-of-a-kind hospitality experience will appeal to the masses. So long as the masses enjoy caviar and champagne - which, in New York at least, is a pretty safe bet.

The main dining room features a sleek warm design, and an open flow perfect for scoping out the scene. The menu boasts all the right buzz words, from Wagyu Ribeye to Beet Carpaccio to Chips and Dip With Caviar to Truffle Fries, all at acceptable New York prices.

The only thing to make us raise an eyebrow? An easily overlooked dessert item...

    AMERICAN BIRTHDAY CAKE

Susie Cakes, Slice or Whole, Sprinkles No Extra Charge 18 / 125

If you're not familiar, Susie Cakes is an online bakery, with locations across Texas and California, which offers nationwide shipping on a range of their classic cake flavors.

The whole Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake will cost you $49 at one of their bakeries, $99 if you buy it directly online, and $125 if you order it at RH Guesthouse.

But don't worry, they'll add sprinkles at no extra charge, so it's actually a really amazing deal!

    (Insert eye roll here, obviously.)

All in all, the cake is  unremarkable to say the least, and if anything, sorry to say, tastes like something that came in the mail.

Which makes you wonder - why, of all things for them to outsource, would this upscale restaurant that requires guests to wear 'Proper Attire' be selling a days-old plain chocolate cake that came in a box from California?

    Are we missing something?

I mean, we're totally going back because they have the absolute most perfect, platonic ideal of simple green salads, but still, in a city with ALL the best bakeries, weird move RH.
