Sociopaths are really intelligent in some areas, but totally stupid in others (e.g. basic human decency, social cues, emotional intelligence). They can easily spot what restaurants and bars in the Bronx are "fronts" for the mafia, yet they didn't go to Fordham. They know how to cook meth like Walter White did as well as the entire human anatomy, yet they are dumb enough to go to Fordham. They're Dean Parmach, who was my soulless, unmerciful dean when I went to Fordham.
Or they've got the book smarts but not the well rounded social skills to attend Harvard and didn't have to have their parents buy them admission because they aren't a St. Paul's alumna. Just like the Unabomber!
