What is orange wine made from? How does it get its distinct color?

The term “Orange Wine” is a relatively new one in the wine world, yet the ancient technique and production of this style of wine is thousands of years old. Orange Wine is a blanket description referring to a style of white wine production of extended skin contact or maceration giving the wine a darker sometimes amber, deep orange or golden color. They are made in a similar fashion to red wine, where the must (pre-fermented juice) is left in contact with its skins for days, weeks or even months. Most traditional and modern white wine is made with little-to-no skin contact. The result of an extended skin maceration is much more than just a deep orange color. There is also an increased intensity on the nose, palette and tannins, that develops into a wine of heightened complexity and originality.
