Biltmore - Asheville, NC

This grandiose Southern mansion was commissioned to be built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and reigns as the largest privately-owned home in America. The Châteauesque main house features 178,926 square feet of living space, a banquet hall with 70-foot ceilings, and over 10,000 volumes of books in its impressive library. There are now a spattering of hotels and inns on the property, so you can actually stay on the grounds when you visit.
